Rust on Car. Removal/Restoration Instructions?

I own a ’93 Nissan Sentra Classic car. For the most part the vehichle has been very reliable. My only complaint is the rust.

Rust appears mostly along the edges of the frame, above the wheels, door handles, and spots on the door. Compared to the rest of the frame, the rusted regions appear to swell a bit higher bubbling in regions. There is some flaking and in a couple areas there is a crack – one deep the other less so — but mostly just the swelling effect.

My first impression is sanding the areas down then recoating the car with much thicker paint. I went over to Canadian Tires to check for useful products and came across: Rust Check’s Rust Converter, and Rust Removal.

What are your thoughts on these products in assisting in removing rust, and the steps i should take in cost-effectively removing the rust / restoring the color on my vehicle. I am willing to go the DIY approach, if there’s some good books/sites.

Thanks!
If it makes any difference, the rust spots can be about 5 inches across spanning the length of the frame above the wheel. It has a very coarse, bumpy feel to it.

You can expect some of the rust to be penetrating from the inside around the rear wheel wells.
The rust converter product works pretty good at slowing the rust. But from what you describe you are interested in doing a fairly decent body restoration.I don’t think this is something to be learned so much by reading as by hands on experience with the multitude of products and procedures necessary to complete a decent job.
If you took it to a shop they would sandblast the surface rust, cut out and replace the rusted wheel arches, smooth with body fillers, prime the repaired areas and feather edged spots, finish sand the entire vehicle and apply coats of paint.
With very little to work with, you can neutralize the rust with converter, apply body filler, sand and prime, then maybe have Maaco spray it.

What are some of thest methods to remove rust from a car? Has anyone tried Electrolytic Rust Removal devices?

I’d use the newest & most technologically advanced rust prevention system made by KBS Coatings. Their prep products are enhanced w/ oxygen block inhibitors and their rust preventive paint beats the old standard (Por15). KBS RustSeal is also a moisture-cured nonporous coating but it has much better UV stability, better pigment dispersion which means better adhesion & long term coating performance, richer deeper colors & self-leveling uniform sheens. It also has a faster even cure time which jobbers like myself like.
